(The Hosting News) – Netcraft’s latest web server survey showed a significant decrease for Apache, overall representing a decline in 1.8 million hostnames.

At its current rate, Apache covers 45% of the market, its lowest showing since January of 1998.

“Despite gaining 18M new sites this month, 16M sites previously served by Apache no longer exist and a further 4M sites have moved to other web servers, including 1.5M sites to nginx and 420k sites to Microsoft. This loss was also seen in the SSL survey in which Apache lost 5.8k sites, but it continues to be the largest web server with 43% of the SSL market,” explained Netcraft via a blog post.

Microsoft servers represented 21.74% of the server market, slightly up compared to the previous period. Meanwhile, servers via nginx and Google both remained steady. To view Netcraft’s blog post, go here (news.netcraft.com).
